Disassembling the battery of the 2019 MG ZS EV.

Welcome back to the 1.4 channel! In our last video, we showed you how to replace the battery pack in a 2019 MG ZS EV with a battery we bought from a scrapyard for £25,000. Today, we’re going to open up the old pack and show you the modules and cells inside, and discuss what we might do with that pack next. So, let’s dive right in!

As we start to strip the battery down, we can see the various cables coming in and going to all the cells, carrying different voltages depending on which wires you grab hold of. It’s important to be cautious when handling these live wires, but with proper insulation, it can be done safely.

Next, we remove the BMS unit, which looks expensive and well-designed. We then proceed to remove the modules, each containing six cells in series, giving a 21-volt pack. The process is straightforward, with each module being securely fastened to the cooling pad for efficient heat dissipation.

After characterizing all the batteries and ensuring they are at safe voltages, we begin removing the bus bars and balancing wires, exercising caution due to the high voltage involved. By taking proper precautions and understanding the risks, the process can be done safely.

With all the bus bar links removed, we are left with multiple 21-volt modules ready to be removed from the carrier. Each module is carefully lifted out, revealing the thermal pad underneath and the clever design of the cooling system.

As we examine the case and the individual modules, we see the master and slave configurations, with different connection points and welding tabs for the aluminum links. The intricate design and layout of the cells showcase the thoughtfulness and engineering that goes into these EV battery packs.
