At Gruber Motor Company, we have a unique story to share about a Tesla Model S that found new life through the power of music – or rather, the power of a faulty battery pack. This particular Model S was originally priced at a steep $10,000 due to its malfunctioning main propulsion battery pack, which would cost $20,000 to replace. With the car’s total value being only around $30,000, it seemed like this vehicle was destined to remain unsold.
However, a determined customer approached us with a request to repair the battery pack, and we were more than up for the challenge. What followed was a fascinating journey into the heart of the Model S’s battery system, where we discovered the intricate workings of the lithium-ion cells that power these electric vehicles.
The first step in the process was to carefully remove the 1200-pound battery pack from its cavity in the car using an electric pallet jack. This allowed us to access the individual modules within the pack, which are comprised of thousands of lithium-ion cells arranged in a specific configuration.
