Today’s blog post is not one that I am particularly excited about, but it is a necessary one. Unfortunately, I have a DIY video for you today, but it’s not for something fun or exciting. It’s for something that is a common inconvenience that many of us have faced – a nail in your tire.
Living in a newer neighborhood where construction is still ongoing can often lead to finding nails scattered everywhere. This was the case for me recently when I discovered a big fat nail in my front passenger tire. While the tire was still holding air, I knew that I would need to address the issue sooner rather than later.
In the DIY video, I walk you through the process of fixing a nail in a tire using a tire repair kit. I begin by squirting a little degreaser on the nail to check if it is holding air, which it was. Despite the tire holding air, I knew that I would need to plug the hole to prevent any future issues.
I explain that while it is always safer to replace a tire rather than plug it, in some cases, like mine where the nail was in the middle of the tread, it is possible to plug the tire. I also highlight the importance of understanding the age of your tires, especially on all-wheel drive cars, to avoid issues with different tread patterns.
I then demonstrate how to use the tire repair kit to plug the nail hole in the tire. I show how to prepare the plug, clean the hole with the reaming tool, and insert the plug using the insertion tool. It may sound complicated, but it is a straightforward process that can be done quickly and effectively.
After successfully plugging the nail hole in my tire, I emphasize the importance of disposing of the nail properly to avoid driving over it again. I also show how to trim off the excess plug and explain that while it may not be the prettiest solution, it is effective in fixing the tire.
In a surprising turn of events, I also discover a nail in another one of my tires, but this time in a safer location in the tread. I repeat the process of plugging the nail hole, showing that the tire repair kit is a handy tool to have in case of emergencies.
I conclude the video by recommending the tire repair kit I used and emphasizing the importance of having one in your car, especially before embarking on a road trip. While fixing a nail in a tire may not be the most exciting task, it is a valuable skill to have in your DIY repertoire.
So, if you ever find yourself with a nail in your tire, fear not – with the right tools and a bit of know-how, you can easily fix the issue and get back on the road in no time. Remember, safety always comes first, so if in doubt, consult a professional. Happy DIY-ing!
