How to Prevent Premature Tire Wear on Tesla Model S/X: Tips for Maintaining Your Rear Tires

Welcome back to the channel today! We’re diving into the world of Tesla and addressing a recurring problem that every Tesla owner might be familiar with – tire wear. Specifically, we’re talking about the Model X and Model S, and why they seem to be eating through tires faster than they should.

As a seasoned Tesla mechanic, I’ve worked on numerous Model X’s and Model S’s, and one thing that always stands out is the excessive camber and toe settings from the factory. Tesla seems to believe that their alignment specs are not the cause of tire wear, but I beg to differ.

Camber, which refers to the angle of the wheels relative to the road, plays a significant role in tire wear. When a car has excessive negative camber, like many Tesla‘s do, it can cause uneven tire wear, especially on the inside of the tire. Additionally, toe, which refers to the angle of the wheels pointing inward or outward, can also accelerate tire wear. When a car is towed in or out, it essentially scrapes the tire sideways along the road, leading to premature wear.

So, what can Tesla owners do to address this issue? One solution that has been recommended to me is installing aftermarket adjustable camber and toe links from a company called Intuitive. These links allow for more precise alignment settings, such as negative 0.7 to 0.8 degrees of camber and a slight toe-in adjustment, which can help improve tire wear and stability.

During the installation process, I adjust the links to be slightly longer than the factory ones to accommodate the desired alignment settings. Once installed, I perform a baseline alignment and adjust as needed to achieve the optimal settings for tire longevity.

After completing the alignment, I noticed a significant improvement in the ride height and alignment settings of the Tesla. The excessive negative camber and toe settings were corrected, and the tire wear should now be more even and consistent.

In conclusion, Tesla‘s alignment specs may not always be optimal for tire wear, but with the right aftermarket adjustments, such as the Intuitive camber and toe links, owners can improve the longevity of their tires. It’s essential for Tesla owners to be aware of this issue and take proactive steps to address it to ensure a smoother and more cost-effective driving experience.
