Preventing Costly Damage to Your Tesla Wheels

Hello everyone and welcome to this video where we will be discussing the advantages of switching from low profile tires to high profile tires on a Tesla Model 3. In this video, we will be replacing the 20-inch wheels with 18-inch wheels with significantly higher profile tires.

The inspiration for this swap came from hitting a pothole during a road trip, which resulted in the destruction of two wheels and two tires. The cost of replacing these damaged parts was over $2600, prompting the need to find a solution to prevent such incidents in the future.

After researching aftermarket options, T-Sportline offered 18-inch wheels that were compatible with the Tesla Model 3 Performance package, which typically only comes with 20-inch wheels. These wheels allowed for the use of higher profile tires, which have a larger sidewall that acts as a crumple zone to reduce the likelihood of wheel and tire damage.

One of the main advantages of using high profile tires is the reduction in cost in case of damage. The cost of replacing a wheel and tire with the aftermarket option was significantly lower than the original equipment, making it a more cost-effective solution. Additionally, the larger sidewall also reduces the likelihood of curbing the wheels.

In terms of performance, the high profile tires showed a two percent improvement in acceleration during 0 to 60 tests compared to the low profile tires. The reduction in unsprung and rotational mass contributed to this improvement, making the car more responsive.

Braking tests also showed a slight improvement with the original equipment tires having a two-foot shorter braking distance compared to the aftermarket tires. The design of the original equipment tires, specifically tailored for the Tesla Model 3 Performance package, contributed to this difference in performance.

The aftermarket wheels and tires also offered advantages in terms of aerodynamics and rolling resistance, potentially leading to a slight improvement in range. The ease of installation and compatibility with factory lug nuts and TPMS sensors made the switch to aftermarket wheels seamless.

Overall, the switch to high profile tires not only offered practical advantages in terms of cost and performance but also provided a visually appealing look with the larger sidewalls. The combination of improved performance and aesthetics makes the switch to high profile tires a compelling choice for Tesla Model 3 owners.
