Protect Your Tesla Battery: The Correct Way to Charge

As a Tesla owner, one of the worst things you can do is ignore the most expensive part of your car – the battery. The battery not only determines the distance you can travel, which is crucial for any Electric Vehicle, but it also has a huge effect on the car’s actual value. Taking care of your battery is essential, and there are several charging habits you can adopt to optimize its longevity.

I have driven 135,000 miles in my Tesla Model 3, and my battery still has 95% of its original capacity. Many people ask me how I have been able to maintain such good battery health, and the answer lies in researching and practicing good charging habits.

Tesla uses different battery chemistries in their vehicles, with standard range models using lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries and long-range and performance models using nickel-based or NCA batteries. However, most charging tips apply to both battery types.

One important tip is to not overspend on an expensive home EV charger if you don’t absolutely need it. The mobile connector provided by Tesla is a cost-effective and versatile charging solution that can be used at home or on the go. It allows you to charge on a regular outlet, which may be sufficient for daily driving if you drive less than 50-60 miles per day.

Using low voltage chargers as much as possible and only using supercharging on road trips when necessary can help optimize your battery health. Supercharging, while convenient, can accelerate battery degradation if used frequently. Charging to the recommended state of charge for your battery type, avoiding high temperatures, and scheduling charging at off-peak times can also help maintain battery health.

By following these tips and being mindful of your battery’s state of charge and charging habits, you can maximize the longevity of your Tesla battery. Ultimately, taking care of your battery is essential for ensuring the long-term performance and value of your Electric Vehicle. So, make sure to prioritize your battery’s health and adopt good charging habits to enjoy your Tesla for years to come.
