Repairing My Out-of-Warranty Tesla Model Y Cost Me $6000

Have you ever experienced a string of bad luck with your car? Well, I certainly have with my 2020 Tesla Model Y. From factory issues to rear-end collisions, my Tesla has been through it all. But the latest repair I had to deal with was a real doozy, and Tesla wouldn’t cover it under warranty.

When I first got my Model Y, I noticed a number of factory issues that needed to be fixed. My VIN was within the first 2200 made, so it’s likely that contributed to the issues. Tesla did fix all the issues for free, but since then, the car has been rear-ended twice and even had a full battery replacement.

But the latest repair was the most costly and frustrating one yet. My car was making strange noises and leaking fluid, so I had to take it to Tesla service in San Francisco. After a thorough inspection, they found that the front right axle had not been properly installed, resulting in damage to the drive unit casing. They claimed that the issue was caused by the aftermarket coilover suspension I had installed, and therefore, it was not covered under warranty.

I reached out to the company that installed the coilovers, Unplugged Performance, and they provided evidence that the installation could not have caused the issue. But Tesla was adamant that it was the cause and charged me over $6000 for the repair.

After much back and forth, I decided to pay for the repair and move on. The car was fixed, and I even listed it back on Turo for rentals. But the whole experience has left me wary of making modifications to my future vehicles, as it could void the warranty and lead to costly repairs.

In the end, I’ve learned a valuable lesson about the hidden costs and risks of owning a Tesla, especially when it comes to modifications and repairs. Despite the challenges, I’m determined to move forward and continue using my Tesla for rentals, but I’ll definitely be more cautious in the future.
