Alright, so we’re going to change an AC compressor on a 2008 Tesla Model 3. And this shouldn’t take long, let’s see how it goes. So, there are six bolts here, but we only need to take off the entire bracket, so we only need to take off three of them. We’re going to want to loosen the lines, the actual coolant lines. The rear one you can reach with a 13 millimeter socket fairly easily. Now, this system has already been drained, I’ll probably say that like five times. There’s no refrigerant in it, of course, you want to capture your refrigerant before you do this.
Working above the car, I usually take my nuts off with a magnet so if I drop it, it doesn’t go too far. Although I’ve already got the pan off the bottom of the car where I took out all right search one and I’ll pull this hose off and I’ll move this hose where it’s not going to get whacked into everything. So, this is the hose right here and we’re just gonna move it out of the way so it’ll bang into it and then the other one’s right here, this one you can’t get with the socket, but you can get with a decent ratchet.
We’re just taking the other side off, the other pressure line pressure line off. I don’t know if it’s the highway below side, certainly doesn’t matter. Once again, I’m gonna use the magnet a little drop this and have to go fish it out from somewhere. This one pulls off too, just like that, and once again we’re just going to move it out of the way so we don’t bang it up. Now this one has it doesn’t want to pull out of the way because it’s got a wire on the back of it that it’s actually got a wire on the back of it that it’s this is a pressure sensor for the system.
So, we’re going to get this one out of the way as well as I can move it right here just doesn’t get banged up all right. There is a power cord that goes to the floor and we’ve already disconnected it, but you have to take the bottom pin of the motor off, there’s a trick to this, there’s a red tap here that you slide down and then there’s a green piece that you push in to release this clip right there. All right, so the electrical is free, there’s also a couple of wiring tabs here we’ll pull those off as we take this out, but we are free to go.
So, I’m gonna just stick one hand under it, it’s sort of heavy for a one-handed job because you gotta undo some clips here that are fairly obvious because it won’t come out without undoing them and some of them you sort of need a pair of pliers for which of course I don’t have handy. Now this thing probably has oil in it so we could have capped that off the way, make sure nothing else. All right, so we can pull this out enough to do these back two things, we’re going to once again just use a screwdriver here to push this clip.
Okay, and it just pops out and last thing we’ve got is a star driver here, she didn’t get out sorry about that, so it is a star like this the ground. I don’t know why this screw is a full inch long, it’s a little ridiculous put that in the magnet tray, manga trees are nice. All right, now remember this has oil in it so don’t and you’re going to need to measure how much oil is in it so you know how much oil to put back in the system that you took out in general.
Now if you had some sort of systemic failure like you replaced other components or pipes that’s of course going to vary. Now we’re going to put this back in, I’m going to leave these safety caps on so the oil doesn’t pour everywhere and we’re going to Route this high voltage wire first, we’re going to untangle it. These wire Keepers here these things just push onto these exposed nuts they’re really nice they just push on and they just self-grip so they’re not wire ties or anything so you want to Route this the same way the other one came out which is on the left side of these black wires over the frame and down and what we’re going to do is we’re going to go under the car to reconnect that but we don’t need to do that right now we can bolt this right in.
The assembly is the opposite of disassembly so this wire goes in this hole like that and we’re going to go ahead and connect back up this stuff, we’ll do the ground first it is the most constraining and snug that down. Okay, now there’s this clip from the back this is the OBD I mean or can bus to the pump so computer can talk to it, this was the one from the sensor that we unplugged and we’ll plug that back in. Last we want to go ahead and get the pump mounted before that and now we’re just going to slide it up under and this will be a little awkward I’m going to leave this bolt up for a second we have two bolts back there we can use to grab a hold of it and um and let’s see how awkward I can make this drill just so you know this is uh DeWalt it’s the only tool and it’s got a 10 millimeter in it which will make my life much easier and it’s a hammer drill so it torques it pretty good all by itself for a one-handed job because you gotta undo some clips here that are fairly obvious because it won’t come out without undoing them and some of them you sort of need a pair of pliers for which of course I don’t have handy.
