Being a music producer is not just about creating music and getting it out there for the world to hear. It’s about dealing with the mental battles that come with the territory. In this blog post, we’re going to dive deep into the true cost of being a music producer, beyond just the numbers and statistics.
I’ve worked with over 800 music producers, and a common theme that comes up in our sessions is the anxiety, burnout, overthinking, and depression that many of them face. The pressure to constantly create, market, and perform can take a toll on their mental health, and it’s a topic that is not discussed enough in the music industry.
As a music producer myself, I understand the struggles that come with the job. That’s why I’ve developed some key mantras and advice that have helped my students overcome their mental hurdles and achieve great results in their careers.
One of the key mantras I constantly repeat is “the only way out is through.” This mantra emphasizes the importance of facing your fears and anxieties head-on, rather than avoiding them. By confronting your challenges, you can break the cycle of negative reinforcement and move forward in your career.
Another mantra I often share is “don’t overthink it, neither will they.” This mantra reminds music producers to not get caught up in perfectionism and to remember that most listeners are not analyzing their work as deeply as they are. By letting go of the need for perfection, producers can focus on creating music that brings joy to their audience.
I also remind my students that they are not cardiologists – they are in the business of creating fun and enjoyable music. By shifting their perspective and focusing on the joy their music brings to others, producers can alleviate some of the pressure they put on themselves to constantly achieve.
Lastly, I encourage my students to focus on the journey, not just the end goal. By finding joy in the day-to-day process of creating music, producers can avoid feeling disappointed or overwhelmed when they achieve their goals. Celebrating the small victories along the way can lead to a more fulfilling and sustainable career in music production.
Being a music producer is not easy, but by addressing the mental challenges that come with the job and adopting a positive mindset, producers can navigate the ups and downs of the industry with resilience and creativity. If you’re a music producer struggling with your mental health, remember that you’re not alone, and there are resources and support available to help you on your journey.
