For years, Tesla and a few other all-electric brands have been claiming that electric vehicles will have much lower repair and maintenance costs due to having fewer moving parts than combustion engine vehicles.
There have been skeptics about this claim, especially for Tesla, since it is a premium brand and premium brands typically have higher maintenance and repair costs. However, we now have actual data to prove it. Consumer Reports recently released its 2023 annual Auto survey, which includes data direct from thousands of car owners in the United States. The magazine confirmed that Tesla‘s maintenance and repair costs are the lowest of any brand in the auto industry.
This is particularly impressive considering the average cost of Tesla vehicles versus the average cost of some other brands. However, it would be interesting to see a breakdown of the data specifically for electric vehicles, as this study is largely comparing EVs to gas cars. Many other premium car brands have expensive maintenance programs that are mandatory, keeping them out of the rankings for low maintenance costs. Tesla, on the other hand, does not require mandatory maintenance programs, and it is paying off in terms of lower costs for owners.
One Tesla owner I know has one of the oldest Tesla vehicles, a Model S from 2013. He recently had to do significant repairs on the suspension after 12 years of ownership. This is a testament to the longevity and reliability of Tesla vehicles.
