I have been eagerly awaiting the moment to provide an update on my rebuilt Tesla large 0.599 Drive Unit in my Toyota RAV4. After installing the new Chen Ming triple lip Teflon seal, I have been closely monitoring its performance as it approaches 2,000 miles. The big question on my mind has been whether the new seal has been able to keep the unit dry or if any leaks have occurred.
To start off, I checked the Emergency Drain tube and was pleased to find that it was still dry. There were no signs of coolant leakage, which was a good sign. Next, I decided to remove the speed sensor to inspect for any potential issues. Much to my relief, everything seemed dry and in good condition. I even used a Q-tip to poke around and ensure that there were no hidden leaks, and everything checked out fine.
One interesting aspect of this journey has been collaborating with another DIYer named Howard, who also owns a Tesla. Together, we created a website dedicated to the large Drive Unit rebuild process. This site serves as a valuable resource for others looking to undertake a similar project, providing detailed instructions on how to rebuild the unit, tips on high voltage safety, where to source parts, and even a seal longevity database.
The seal database has been particularly helpful, as it contains information on the seals that we have used, as well as input from other DIYers. It tracks the number of miles on each seal and whether they have experienced any leaks. This data has been instrumental in helping us understand what works and what doesn’t when it comes to sealing the Drive Unit effectively.
I encourage anyone interested in learning more about our project and the seal database to check out the link provided in the description. It’s a valuable resource for anyone looking to rebuild a Tesla Drive Unit or simply curious about the process.
Overall, I am thrilled to report that my rebuilt Tesla large 0.599 Drive Unit with the new Chen Ming triple lip Teflon seal has been performing exceptionally well. With nearly 2,000 miles on it, there have been no signs of leaks or issues. I am confident that the seal has proven to be a reliable solution, and I look forward to many more miles of smooth driving ahead.
